Frequently asked

The short answers. Anything missing, hello@yapaloud.com gets a reply.

The basics

What does Yap Aloud actually do?

You add a document — a PDF, an ebook, an article, your own notes — and it reads it to you in a natural voice, highlighting each word as it's spoken. It remembers where you stopped, so you can put the phone in your pocket and come back later.

Which formats can it read?

PDF, EPUB, DOCX, TXT, Web articles, Google Docs, Markdown, Scanned pages. Scanned pages are recognised as text first.

Do I need an internet connection?

Device voices work fully offline. Premium voices are synthesised in the cloud, so they need a connection the first time a passage is read — download a book's audio while online and it plays offline afterwards.

Is there a web reader?

No. Reading happens in the iOS app; the website is for your account, your library overview and billing.

Plans and billing

What do I get for free?

Unlimited books, word-perfect highlighting, saved reading position, and the voices built into your device — no card, no trial clock.

What does Premium add?

Every premium neural voice, roughly 46 hours of cloud narration a month, offline downloads, and 0.5×–2.5× speed without distortion.

What does Premium cost?

On the web, $9.99 a month or $95.88 a year ($7.99 a month). Bought inside the iOS app it's $14.99 a month or $139.99 a year — Apple takes a cut of in-app purchases, so subscribing on the web is cheaper.

One subscription, both places?

Yes. Premium is attached to your account, not to a device or a store, so it follows you everywhere you sign in.

What happens if I hit the monthly limit?

Cloud narration pauses until the next calendar month; device voices keep working, and anything already downloaded still plays. The counter resets on the 1st.

How do I cancel?

Web subscriptions: the billing portal on your account page. App Store subscriptions: iOS Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions. Premium runs to the end of the period you've paid for.

Account and devices

How many devices can I use?

As many as you like. Each one appears in the device list on your account page with when it was last seen, and you can forget any of them there. Forgetting removes the record, not a session — if that install signs in again, it comes back.

I forgot my password.

Ask for a reset link. It arrives by email, lasts an hour and works once. Accounts made with Apple or Google have no password at all — sign in the way you signed up.

I subscribed but the app still says Free.

Tap Restore purchases on the app's account screen; if you bought on the web, sign out and back in on the device. Still stuck after an hour, email us with the receipt.

Can I delete my account?

Yes, and you don't have to ask us: the danger zone on your account page, or the account screen in the iOS app. It erases everything immediately and cancels any web subscription. An App Store subscription still has to be cancelled in iOS Settings — Apple allows nobody else to. Details in Privacy.

Privacy

Are my documents used to train anything?

No. Files you upload are yours; they're stored privately and are never used to train models or shown to anyone else.

Is my text sent to a third party?

The passage being narrated goes to our text-to-speech provider to be turned into audio, and nothing else does. Device voices never leave your phone. Full detail on the Privacy page.
